The President of the Republic, Daniel Francisco Chapo, presided this Thursday, 2 October 2025, in Maputo, the ceremony of the signing of the Final Investment Decision (FID) of the Northern Coral Project FLNG, one of the largest Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) projects in development in the country, led by the multinational ENI and its partners in Area 4.
With an investment of around 7.2 billion dollars and the start of production planned for 2028, the North Coral FLNG will allow the production of 3.55 million tonnes of LNG per year, raising Mozambique's total capacity to 7 million tonnes per year and positioning the country as the world's 14th largest exporter and 4th in Africa.
In his speech, the President of the Republic stressed the strategic importance of the project for the national economy and for the global energy transition. "We are turning gas into energy, energy into industry, industry into jobs and jobs in dignity. The North Coral is a decisive step towards Mozambique's economic independence and to improve the lives of millions of Mozambicans," he said.
The Head of State stressed that the situation in Cabo Delgado is stabilised, creating conditions for the resumption of disrupted projects and strengthening investor confidence. "Capo Delgado is reborn. Mozambique reaffirms itself as a safe and reliable country to invest, committed to stability, the rule of law and sustainable development," he said.
The Chairman of the INP Board of Directors, Nazário Bangalane, who participated in the ceremony accompanied by the members of the Board of Directors and other INP executives who actively participated in the evaluation of the Northern Coral Development Plan FLNG, highlighted the transforming impact of the North Coral as follows: "This project represents a qualitative leap in the exploitation of our resources and will allow the country to raise revenue over its lifetime, create jobs and contracts for Mozambican companies for the supply of goods and services."
It should be noted that the project plans to generate around $23 billion of recitals, over 1400 jobs and a volume of around $800 million in contracts for Mozambican companies in the first six years, with the potential to exceed $3 billion. "
Bangalane added that the National Petroleum Institute reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that Mozambique’s oil resources are exploited efficiently, sustainably and for the benefit of all Mozambicans.
Remember that the journey began in 2006, with the signing of the concession agreement of Area 4 of the Rovuma Basin, going through research and discoveries in several fields located in this Sedimentary Basin, including the Coral Field. The success of the South Coral FLNG, the first LNG floating plant in Africa’s ultra-deep waters, whose first production began in 2022, has already allowed the export of more than 123 natural gas shipments and 17 condensates to Asian and European markets, has created the necessary technical, economic and reliable bases for this new stage.
With the North Coral Final Investment Decision FLNG, Mozambique consolidates its position on the global energy map as a strategic energy partner at global level and opens a new cycle of economic and social development based on the enhancement of its natural resources.
