The National Institute of Petroleum (INP) praised, this Wednesday, ( 04-06-2025) the decisive contribution of ROMPCO (Republic of Mozambique Pipeline Investments Company) to the growth of the natural gas sector in the country, during the gala dinner allusive to the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the company, preceded by the inauguration ceremony of its new office in Maputo.
Acting at the event, the Chairman of the INP Board of Directors, Nazário Bangalane, stressed that ROMPCO has been "a strategic partner in implementing the national vision of transforming natural resources into engines for sustainable development".
The company, which results from a partnership between the Government of Mozambique, Sasol and other entities in the private sector, manages the Mozambique–Secunda (MSP) pipeline, an infrastructure of 867 km connecting the Pande and Temane fields, in the province of Inhambane, to the neighbouring Republic of South Africa. This pipeline was built following the agreement signed in October 2000 and has been decisive for the disposal of natural gas and boosting the Mozambican and South African economy.
" This pipeline represents not only an energy transport infrastructure, but also a symbol of a successful public-private partnership with a direct impact on the national economy and the region," said the INP's PCA.
With a transport capacity that has evolved from 122 MGJ/year to 212 MGJ/year, thanks to the implementation of compressors and looplines, as well as the installation of five take-off points in the national territory, ROMPCO has played an important role in strengthening the domestic energy market. The interconnection points are located in Funhalour, Chókwè, Magude (two) and Moamba.
During the ceremony, Bangalane reiterated the call to ROMPCO to "enlarge its contribution through projects with a direct impact on local communities, national framework training programs and greater alignment with local content targets".
The opening of the new Office in Maputo represents, according to the INP, "an important step towards consolidating the institutional presence of RUMPCO in Mozambique and deepening cooperation links with the various players in the energy sector".
ROMPCO is jointly owned by the Government of Mozambique, through the MGC (40%), the South African Gas Development Company iGas (40%), and South African oil Sasol (20%). Since its inception, the company has contributed to the integration of cross-border markets and the growth of natural gas distribution in Mozambique and South Africa.
