The National Petroleum Institute (INP), representing the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME), took part this Tuesday in the plenary session of the regional seminar "Parliamentary Leadership: Energy Transition and Economy of Oil and Gas in SADC", which takes place in Maputo, from today until 31 July.
In the panel entitled "Countries Experiences: Fossil Fuel Revenues and the Transition to Renewable Energies", the INP shared Mozambique's strategic approach to the use of natural gas as a transition energy and a motor for economic development. The intervention of the Chairman of the INP Board of Directors, Eng.o Nazário Bangalane, highlighted the gains already achieved in the sector and the relevance of the resource in the construction of a balanced, inclusive and sustainable energy matrix.
"Mozambique is positioning natural gas not only as a strategic export commodity, but as a structural pillar of our development model. This enables cleaner energy, revenue, industrialisation and fair, phased and financially viable energy transition. And because it has lower carbon intensity compared to other fossil fuels, natural gas is a key component in the Energy Transition Strategy, approved in 2023," said Bangalane. The PCA also referred to the hydrocarbon potential of Mozambique, estimated at 180 trillion cubic feet (CTF) of natural gas, part of which is already produced, highlighting the Southern Coral FLNG project, located in Area 4 of the Rovuma Basin, which has already carried 126 shipments of liquefied natural gas until June. This project, the first FLNG (Floating Liquefied Natural Gas) in ultra-deep water operating in the world, places Mozambique as one of the leading global exporters of natural gas and contributes significantly to global energy security.
" Tax revenues, infrastructure developed and the transfer of technical knowledge provided by natural gas projects must be intelligently mobilised to diversify our energy matrix and ensure tangible benefits for present and future generations. Therefore, the INP will continue to ensure technical and rigorous regulation in line with international best practices and the country's environmental commitments", concluded the PCA, Nazario Bangalane.
Organized by the Assembly of the Republic, in partnership with the SADC Parliamentary Forum (SADC PF), Southern Africa Resource Watch (SARW) and the Institute for Multiparty Democracy (IMD), the event brings together parliamentarians from the region, energy specialists, civil society and government entities, in order to strengthen the role of parliamentary leadership in energy transition policies and climate change.
